Niall Ferguson: Empires on the Edge of Chaos

I don't know about you but I am really tired of people coming up with reasons to be depressed. As you can see from watching WTF (You have watched WTF right? All of it, yes?) I am more and more convinced that the world is not in imminent danger of ceasing to be. I think we are prone to panic and tend to be swayed by a lot of, well, nonsense. I believe that peoples ingenuity will trump the problems we face and, unusual as it may sound,  I am excited for my childrens future. There I said it.

Alas and However, every now and then someone comes up with a theory and a way of looking at things that does genuinely concern me. This guy is - as they say in the classics - BRIGHT! And I think he is one to something here. It's not what you think and it will take a good 30 mins of listening but iyts worth it. If you are fond of Uncle Sam and Apple Pie you should take a listen and let me know what you think. Also just a shout out to the folks at Fora.tv where I first saw this - an astonishing website.

Give a man a fish and he has a meal for a day. Teach a man NOT to fish and you feed him and his family and the sharks.

I think this is a really elegant solution with no crazy alarmist talk and a good assessment of and creative sloution to all the real world problems involved. All at a cost of negative $19 billion. This is Bjorn Lomborg thinking taken to its illogical but fortunate extreme. Clever.
